Foreman (Steel Erection)

The Construction Foreman (Steel Erection) is a front-line supervisory-level positionThe Construction Foreman (Steel Erection) assists the Superintendent in supervising and leading a group of Employee-Owners (i.e., construction crews and the individual Employee-Owners on a jobsite) in the erection of pre-engineered, prefabricated steel buildings. Foremen ensure that their construction crews and workers do their jobs safely, skillfully, efficiently, and on schedule.   This position requires strong leadership and mentoring abilities and a strong desire to learn. 

Essential Functions 

Safety Responsibilities 

  • Prioritizes safety as the utmost importance, even before production, and promotes a jobsite culture that makes safety the primary focus for all Employee-Owners at all times. 
  • Assists the Superintendent or, at times, conducts frequent safety meetings, including but not limited to daily morning huddles and weekly “Toolbox Safety Talks.” 
  • Completes all required and/or necessary safety-related reports and inspections, including but not limited to daily safety reports, daily Jobsite Safety Analyses (JSAs), daily equipment inspections, and other periodic inspections of equipment, machinery, materials, and tools. 
  • Communicates and enforces safety procedures and site rules. 
  • Assists the Superintendent in coaching, translating and administering disciplinary actions with Employee-Owners for safety infractions, adhering to company progressive disciplinary action procedures. 
  • Provides support to the Superintendent in investigating and documenting safety infractions. 
  • Responsible for directing crew to complete work in accordance with OSHA and Company safety policies and regulations, as well as any site-specific requirements. 

 

Strategic Responsibilities:

  • Assists the Superintendent in successful and meaningful onboarding and training of field Employee-Owners, including but not limited to indoctrination from day one into the Company’s culture, particularly with respect to its safety culture.   
  • Responsible for the day-to-day management of field Employee-Owners assigned, including but not limited to administering Company policies. 
  • Supervises, trains, and leads crews and individual Employee-Owners throughout the duration of the project while constantly demonstrating proper procedures and promoting safety, accuracy, and efficiency. 
  • Assists the Superintendent in coaching and administering disciplinary actions with Employee-Owners for policy infractions, adhering to company progressive disciplinary action procedures. 
  • Is responsible for providing coaching and mentoring to Employee-Owners. 
  • Responsible for directing crew to complete specific scope in adherence to project schedules/deadlines. 

 

Pre-Construction Responsibilities 

  • Is responsible for learning how to access site-specific and other relevant documents. 
  • Attends and actively participates in pre-construction hand-off meeting. 
  • Assists the Superintendent in modifying the delivery schedule of projects as needed. 
  • Assists the Superintendent in securing all equipment, safety material, and tools needed for the project.   
  • Reviews with the  Superintendent all relevant documents, such as SPAN Shipping Lists, shop drawings, and cut sheets prior to materials being sent to jobsite.  
  • Responsible for pre-construction activities on the jobsite, such as receiving materials and equipment and setting up all work areas, including the jobsite office.   

 

Construction Phase Responsibilities 

  • Deciphers drawings and directs proper layout and placement of building components. 
  • Plans, coordinates, assigns, and directs the day-to-day work and activities of construction crews and workers. 
  • Is responsible for organizing, maintaining, issuing, and managing tools and equipment on site, and effectively and timely communicating inventory needs to the Superintendent. 
  • Regularly inspects work for quality and adherence to SPAN standard details, drawings, plans, and other relevant specifications and directives. 
  • Is responsible for reviewing construction schedules and ensuring timely completion of site-specific tasks and objectives. 
  • Anticipates problems and/or conflicts that may arise during phases of construction and proactively adjusts accordingly. 
  • In the absence and in support of the Superintendent,  completes and submits professional, accurate, concise, and consistent daily reports to effectively document the events of each day and create a comprehensive record of events. 
  • Regularly reviews updated and revised drawings and documents to ensure all new details are incorporated into the work plan.  
  • In the absence and in support of the Superintendent, communicates and cooperates with inspectors coming to the jobsite, demonstrating knowledge of the project, relevant drawings, and the required inspections, and addresses any deficiencies found as a result of an inspection in a timely manner. 
  • Ensures specifications and regulations outlined in architectural and engineering plans are followed and that the Company’s quality standards are met, including ensuring the quality of building components. 

 

Closeout Responsibilities 

  • Addresses, ensures, and documents the proper and timely completion of all open action items listed on inspection reports from the Quality Assurance department and any associated punch lists.  
  • Conducts inspection, reconciliation, and inventory of tools, materials, and safety gear in preparation for the next project. 

 

Other Responsibilities/Duties 

  • Endeavors to stay up-to-date with emerging technologies and trends in the construction field. 
  • Projects a positive image of the organization to Employee-Owners, clients, industry, and community.

Project Manager

Position(s): SPAN is proud to be a 100% Employee Owned Company (ESOP). We are currently seeking qualified individuals to fill a construction Project Manager (PM) position. Optimal candidates will have experience with design-build, steel building, projects and in managing projects in the capacity of a General Contractor.

A PMs role is essential to the success of a project during construction phases. PMs are engaged with our sales and estimating teams early on in the project in and are ultimately responsible in understanding and carrying out the construction of their assigned project. They are responsible for overseeing project organization, budgeting, scheduling, and execution. More specifically, the PM has complete responsibility to assure that any project assigned to them is completed to contracted specifications, in a safe manner, within both time frame and construction budget allotted.

PM’s are responsible for building and maintain these positive client relationships throughout their project; striving for 100% customer satisfaction. The Preferred PM Candidate Will Have:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree (4 year college or technical school) in Construction Project Management
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in construction management, budgeting, coordinating, and overseeing commercial and/or industrial full turn-key projects
  • 3 years experience working with, writing, and issuing Owner and subcontractor contracts and change orders (from proposal to full execution)

Essential Functions:

  • Review and thoroughly evaluate contract, project scope, and other hand off materials from the Pre-Construction Service group to ensure a complete and comprehensive understanding of Owner contract, project budget and schedule
  • Identify SPAN and Owner driven priorities, and align with operational goals of the project
  • Be investigatory in order to understand the full scope of work and any project specific considerations that have cost impacts
  • Review architectural drawings for understanding and clarify any conflicting information
  • Review Pre-Engineered Building and vendor drawings for understanding of materials provided and installation requirements; clarifying any conflicting information
  • Review subsequently issued drawings or project revisions; any pertinent changes must be accounted for with a change order to the client and in turn, conveyed to vendors/subcontractors/field personnel
  • Partner with Controller regarding status of required local/state business license; ensure licenses are obtained
  • Requisition all labor, equipment and materials necessary to complete the project: work with engineering personnel as deemed necessary to finalize the material orders and to establish guidelines for the execution of the engineering work required for the project
  • Write the necessary subcontracts and purchase orders needed, as needed, if not already executed by the Pre-Construction Services Team
  • Ensure subcontractor insurance and safety requirements and/documentation are provided and adhered to per contract
  • Conduct or attend a preconstruction meeting with the Owner and Subcontractors to ensure that everyone understands the requirements and schedule for the project
  • Prepare progress billings in a timely manner in compliance with the requirements of the prime contract
  • Review and authorize vendor and subcontractor invoices; considering project budget
  • Upon final completion of the project: walk the job with the Client for approval and project feedback, receive and prioritize completion of punch list items
  • Provide critical and strategic input to potential options to enable the best chance of project success
  • Prepares cost analysis in computer by recapitulating material, labor, equipment, subcontractor and overhead costs incurred in the installation of items.
  • Attends departmental meetings as required

Position Summary: Through design services, the Architectural Design Manager helps to ensure that SPAN is able to be a strategic partner with its clients and constantly exceeding their expectations in bringing their projects to fruition. Architectural Design Managers play a key role in setting up projects for success through creative focus, innovation, and truly catching the vision of the client and understanding the client’s needs. This position heavily supports the entire Pre-Construction Services Team (Estimators, Project Managers, Business Development Team members, etc.) to deliver a variety of commercial and industrial projects, assisting with and collaborating heavily on the pre-construction phase of the project, providing/developing conceptual design, establishing project scope, budget, and managing the design process through all construction phases. 

The Preferred Candidate Will Have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture
  • 10+ years of experience with commercial and industrial construction design and construction administration.
  • Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook. Proficient with Revit, AutoCAD, Sketchup, BIM modeling, and other design programs.
  • Architect’s license is not required, but is highly beneficial.

An Estimator’s role is essential to the success of a project. Estimators are engaged with our clients early in the conceptual phase of a project, and ultimately set the tone for the project. Summary Of Responsibilities:

As a Preconstruction Administrative Assistant you would be responsible for providing administrative support to the Preconstruction Services Department in the preconstruction phases of a project. An Administrative Assistant is a supportive role within our department, who will also assist our Sales team members with prequalification packages and power point presentations. The admin will assist the Estimators with prequalification of trade contractors and vendors, while simultaneously updating the database used in solicitation and outreach of bid proposals. This includes, but is not limited to, the preparation, presentation, and quality control of project files (including construction drawings, specifications, addenda, bid RFI responses, etc.).

The admin is involved in the day to day interactions with trade contractors and staff. This role performs other job related clerical duties to support the department’s needs and may occasionally work as a back-up admin, or administrative support depending on the work load. This role is critical to the department, as they are instrumental in keeping the department organized and scheduled.
